Samsung LN-T4681F 46-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV with LED Backlight Review

I finally took the plunge for an HD set. At the time that I last set up my home theater – HD had _just_ come on market. Some early CRT-based HD sets were available, but the specification wasn’t quite there, and certainly content availability was very low. The sets were _very_ expensive as well. So I simply opted for a high-end Standard Def. set from Sony.

Things were fine for a long time.

Then the LCD sets came on the market. Vendors wanted more money for what was, to my eyes, an inferior picture. CRT based sets were quickly discontinued – not necessarily because LCD technology was superior (it certainly wasn’t) – but because such sets take much less floor space on a show room floor. The poor color representation, and pixelization, and motion blur of LCD sets turned me off, and Plasma wasn’t much better. I just couldn’t see spending more money for a worse picture, even if the set had physical advantages in terms of space, and power savings.

Well, fast forward to today. After looking over several Samsung models – I ended up purchasing this set. It’s by no means the current “best available” at this point – but considering the price and quality it’s quite good. The black levels on this set are amazing (none of that dark gray = black). The color representation is excellent. And, so far, judder and motion blur seem acceptably low.

Hi-definition sportscasts look amazing. NHL and NBA (currently in-season) look fantastic – the gleam of the ice or the court, or the reflections off the glass barriers is really something to see.

The X-Box 360 looks fantastic in 1080p – and video games don’t seem to have any real lag between the control and updates of on-screen action.

The 3:2 pulldown, movie mode (24 fps) looks quite alright so far. Several DVDs (don’t have the Blu-Ray yet) look almost Hi-Def when up-sampled (several guests have been amazed that it wasn’t actually a Hi-Def source).

All in all, pleasantly happy with this set, and looking forward to several years of viewing pleasure.

Excellent TV! – Joseph A. Pagliuca III – Dedham, MA

Get it while it lasts – xiphias – Mid-Atlantic USA
Best LCD I’ve seen to date, bar none. I did my homework for quite sometime and found the 81F series to be a hidden gem. This being the 2007 LED backlit series, it was ,000 cheaper than the 2008 Samsung LN46A950 (120Hz). Thankfully, I got mine in time: the 2009 Luxia series Samsungs LNXXB8000 (240Hz), LNXXB7000 and LNXXB6000 do not have local LED dimming! What’s the point of having an LED backlight? Grab your A950 and 81F series while you can.

Only one notable con: sound quality. Certainly not a deal breaker, but you’ll definitely not want to depend on the internal speakers.

Samsung TV – Marc L. Otten – New York, NY
Great TV at a great price. Incredibly easy to install, no problems with delivery. Great picture.

Samsung HLT5687SAX 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV Review

I’ve had this TV for just over a year now. All I can say is that if you can still find one at any kind of reasonable price, buy it. This is very possibly the best technology/electronics purchase I’ve ever made (and I’ve made a lot more than a few).

The picture on this thing is just tremendous. One of the outstanding features of it is how great regular, standard-def channels look on it…particularly compared to some I’ve seen on some LCDs and plasmas. The HD is flat-out stunning. A bonus is its’ very low max power consumption of 230 watts. There are smaller screen plasmas out there that take 500 – 550 watts. No thanks — I live in Ohio where electricity is expensive.

I have an unusual shaped den that has kind of a largish niche in one wall, so I didn’t need a flat panel for (presumably) space-saving purposes. This thing is still only about 11 inches deep. An old-style 26″ tube set is probably a lot thicker than this.

After I had it for a month or two and realized it was the best TV I’d ever owned (and was definitely a keeper), I bought two cabinets to put on either side to hold the DVD player, TIVO, etc. and then had a cabinet maker make a custom stand for the TV that matched the side piers. Sweet.

Samsung’s new LED light engine replaces the arc lamp & color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs, and realizes beautiful color. LED will last the life of the TV. Samsung LED DLP TVs eliminate the need to replace the consumable lamps every few years, and thus have less impact on the environment and on one’s wallet. Samsung’s LED light engine makes possible an Ultra-Wide Color Gamut that exceeds the NTSC defined color space spec for richer color than you’ve seen before on TV. Great while it lasted – 2.5 years and no color red. – Jordan Lund – Portland, OR USA
This was my 2nd HDTV, the first being a rear projection unit. The picture was sharp and beautiful from July, 2007 up until January, 2010 at which point the red LED burned out. Researching this online while staring at a blue-green picture I found that this make and model of Samsung has this problem ALL THE TIME.

In fact, I got pretty lucky that it lasted 2.5 years. Some folks have this happen after just 12, 15 or 18 months.

The red LED can be obtained for around 0 but there’s a 4 week backorder on it. Something tells me that’s another indication how common the problem is. I could buy a light engine for 00 but that would be throwing another grand at a set that still has a weak red LED.

Red LED dies far too early – Jeff Nick – Washington DC
Red LED died about 18 months after purchase, conveniently past the 1-year warranty mark. Seems to be a pretty common occurrence if you search around for Samsung LED DLPs issues. Replacing the LED unit is very expensive, sometimes half the cost of the TV value. The failure rate is so bad that Samsung is stopping (or has stopped?) production on all LED DLPs. Go with bulb-based if you’re getting a rear projection TV. Reliability is perhaps the most important feature of a large screen TV for me, which this TV seems to fail miserably at.

15 months only – p and j –
This TV was fine for 15 months, and then the red led or something to that effect failed today so we now have a blue-green tv. Of course amazon only has a 30 day warranty and samsung only has a 365 day warranty (unless you pay extra)so we are stuck. I will post again if the local repair facility is able to fix it in a short and cost effective manner.
If not, my advice is to not buy from samsung.

Samsung UN46B8000 46-Inch 1080p 240Hz LED HDTV Review

First I would like to comment on the tv itself…the color and clarity are superb. It is far better than I expected. You will definitely not be disappointed with this purchase. Set up instructions weren’t the greatest, but I was able to get it done by myself. I had this tv hooked up to Directv HD and it is outstanding! Pictures are so crisp and life like that you fill as if you are in the same room as the actors.

Now for my purchasing experience…I ordered this television on Amazon January 12th with an expected delivery date of January 19th using Pilot Freight Services. By the 19th I had no contact from the delivery company whatsoever. I called Pilot and was told that they handed my tv off to another delivery agent (Ryder Logisitics); they transferred me over to Ryder and the man I spoke with said, “uh, yeah we got it in on the 15th but it didn’t get put on the delivery truck in time and we only deliver in your area once a week so you’ll be getting it next week.” Of course I was furious and called Amazon Customer Service right then. Amazon apologized and said that they would contact Pilot and get it all straighted out and because my delivery wasn’t made on time Amazon was going to reimburse my shipping fee. By that same afternoon I had a call from Pilot saying they had contacted yet again another delivery agent (Midsouth Trucking) who could deliver my tv on January 22nd. As promised my tv was delivered on the 22nd. However, I did have to unbox and set it up myself (no biggie though). I really have to commend Amazon Customer Service for straightening out the delivery service and getting my product delivered. The ladies at Amazon Customer Service were extremely professional and understanding and I just can’t say enough about how great they were to me. The people I talked to at Pilot were also apologetic and helpful in getting on the ball and finding another delivery agent for me.

Although at first frustrating, I would highly recommend buying this tv and buying it from Amazon!!

samsung un46b8000 over rated – Harry Kochman – Howell, NJ
The Samsung un46b8000 which I thought was the best TV turned out to be a disappointment . For 00 I would expected much better. It runs no different then any other LED 46 inches. The background is fuzzy; it shows 1080i different than the specs, the picture is ok. The price over priced. No one to talk to regarding questions… If Amazon sells this TV, it should have phone # to call regarding questions. I would definitely not recommend the Samsung un46b8000. Samsung should be a shamed for putting out such a hyped product….

Great picture & great delivery – G. Wilburn –
I was a bit leary of ordering something like this over the internet, but the experience was awesome. This is a great TV, but the sound quality is the only reason I don’t give it 5 stars. There is absolutely no base – everything sounds “tinny”. I will likely get a home theater system to complement the TV.

I saw many other reviews that said the same thing… believe it. This is the best picture in the biz, don’t let the low grades on sound keep you from buying it.

Can’t say enough about the purchase experience with Amazon… especially with TVs… nearly all other online merchants will not allow you to return the item. Delivery was very quick.

Not worth the money at all… – Daniel – Houston, TX
This TV is aesthetically amazing in all ways. It’s big, shiny, and extremely thin. It has a superb picture. There is only one problem with this TV: it has a major problem with cloudy spots. I purchased this TV and when I plugged it up I immediately noticed these little white cloudy spots about 4″ in diameter all over the screen when I pressed the power button. These are not noticeable on very bright and colorful images but when there is a dark scene on a movie they appear. I was upset and had the TV replaced through amazon the same week. Well guess what? My new UN46B8000 had the same spots in almost the same places but it was not as vibrant as the previous. The following week I had Samsung send a tech to take a look at it and he said unfortunately this problem is normal with all EDGE LIT models. Well thats when I lost all hope for this TV.
