Samsung HLT5087SAX 50-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV Review

There’s no contest, and it’s a crying shame that these sets are a fast dying breed. 1080p, 120hz, HDMI 1.3 support, and an inherently faster refresh rate than ANY LCD panel produced and you’ve got by far and beyond the absolute best HDTV to reproduce any blu-ray that exists.

Having seen blu-ray on 120hz LCDs, I quickly developed a distaste for the image which due to the problems inherent in digital displays, the look and feel of film had completely disappeared. Pirates of The Carribean: At World’s End, looked like it was shot with a nice HD Camera and forgot to undergo the post production processing that makes it film.

However, when it comes to watching HD Video (like HD off-air broadcasts or HD Satellite TV) this set is no slouch. Watching college football on ESPN or CBS will make you cry and almost forget about buying season tickets. The color palette is incredible and the blacks are BLACK, not dark gray or charcoal.

For reference sake, I’m using a Dishnetwork ViP 211 HD Satellite receiver, a Pioneer BDP-51FD Blu-Ray player (best you can by for under 00, I promise you) and both are jacked in with Accell Ultra Pro AV 2m HDMI 1.3 cables, capable of slinging 10.2 Gbits per second, just like the Monster Cable 1000 HDMI cables for 3 times the price.

I have no regrets. You can take your LCDs and shove ‘em!!

Samsung's LED color and light engine
The revolutionary new LED system available on Samsung DLP HDTVs offers better color, and energy efficiency.

LED (Light Emitting Diode) for modern color realization
Samsung’s new LED light engine replaces the arc lamp & color wheel design of previous DLP HDTVs, and realizes beautiful color. LED will last the life of the TV. Samsung LED DLP TVs eliminate the need to replace the consumable lamps every few years, and thus have less impact on the environment and on one’s wallet. Samsung’s LED light engine makes possible an Ultra-Wide Color Gamut that exceeds the NTSC defined color space spec for richer color than you’ve seen before on TV. Samsung DLP HDTVs with an LED engine are more energy efficient than similar sized flat panel displays, and the lack of a moving color whell in the design means they perform with less noise than any previous DLP HDTV design.

Samsung Cinema Smooth light engine
Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine create’s images with a smoother, more film-like appearance.

Cinema Smooth Light Engine
Samsung is the worldwide leader in creating light engines that harness DLP HDTV technology from Texas Instruments. Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine brings together the right optics, electronic circuitry and replaceable light source to create a brilliant picture that’s more lifelike and much closer to film. Now in its sixth year of evolution, Samsung’s Cinema Smooth light engine delivers crisp, 1080p High Definition resolution with high contrast and brightness, defined edges and sharp detail.

Next Generation DLP Chips from Texas Instruments
Samsung employs a Texas Instruments DLP chip that is comprised of millions of microscopic mirrors. The DLP chip is faster than any other HDTV technology, with the mirrors switching on & off 15,000 times a second to deliver a razor-sharp picture for fast moving images. When combined with Samsung’s new Cinema Smooth light engine, the result is a crisp, bright picture with deep, rich colors that’s closer to film.

SRS TruSurround offers a surround sound experience from only two speakers.

After two years… – Richard L. Boese – Fayetteville, NC United States
After two years, this LED DLP 50″ display still has a better image than any LCD I’ve seen. I only wish I had purchased the 67″ model when they were still available. Samsung should not have discontinued their DLP line of HDTVs. I guess most consumers want a display they can hang on their wall. I use this as a monitor for Blu-ray, HD DVD and a computer, all connected to HDMI ports on my Yamaha receiver. I’ve never used the audio built into the television and never watch television. It’s ideal for my uses and I’ve never seen a display that gives such a film-like reproduction of HD movies. I hope it lasts another 2 years since nothing out there matches it yet.

In about two years you will be crying – D. Smith – CA
These TV’s are junk! In about two years the light engine or one of your LED’s will fail and Sammy won’t do a thing to help you.

Very disappointed with Samsung.

Do not buy Samsung – William D. Turnipseed –
I purchased a Samsung television about eighteen months ago. Two weeks ago the picture became all distorted. Since my television warranty was through Circuit City I had no choice but to call a television repair person out to look at it. As soon as he walked in the door he knew what the issue was. He told me that the part would cost almost as much as the television and that his recommendation was to throw away the television and purchase another one. After doing some research I discovered that there were quite a few Samsung televisions that were going out and that the parts were on backorder for about a month. Samsung was also not helpful. I trying to discuss this with SamsungTweets on Twitter, but he blocked me when I asked why nobody called me like he said they would. The only other answer I got from Samsung was that I needed to take it to a service center; this is after I told them that a television repair person had looked at it. From what I can tell from looking on television repair forums, Samsung televisions look to be pretty flakey.

Samsung HLT5687SAX 56-Inch Slim LED Engine 1080p DLP HDTV Review

I’ve had this TV for just over a year now. All I can say is that if you can still find one at any kind of reasonable price, buy it. This is very possibly the best technology/electronics purchase I’ve ever made (and I’ve made a lot more than a few).

The picture on this thing is just tremendous. One of the outstanding features of it is how great regular, standard-def channels look on it…particularly compared to some I’ve seen on some LCDs and plasmas. The HD is flat-out stunning. A bonus is its’ very low max power consumption of 230 watts. There are smaller screen plasmas out there that take 500 – 550 watts. No thanks — I live in Ohio where electricity is expensive.

I have an unusual shaped den that has kind of a largish niche in one wall, so I didn’t need a flat panel for (presumably) space-saving purposes. This thing is still only about 11 inches deep. An old-style 26″ tube set is probably a lot thicker than this.

After I had it for a month or two and realized it was the best TV I’d ever owned (and was definitely a keeper), I bought two cabinets to put on either side to hold the DVD player, TIVO, etc. and then had a cabinet maker make a custom stand for the TV that matched the side piers. Sweet.

Great while it lasted – 2.5 years and no color red. – Jordan Lund – Portland, OR USA
This was my 2nd HDTV, the first being a rear projection unit. The picture was sharp and beautiful from July, 2007 up until January, 2010 at which point the red LED burned out. Researching this online while staring at a blue-green picture I found that this make and model of Samsung has this problem ALL THE TIME.

In fact, I got pretty lucky that it lasted 2.5 years. Some folks have this happen after just 12, 15 or 18 months.

The red LED can be obtained for around 0 but there’s a 4 week backorder on it. Something tells me that’s another indication how common the problem is. I could buy a light engine for 00 but that would be throwing another grand at a set that still has a weak red LED.

Red LED dies far too early – Jeff Nick – Washington DC
Red LED died about 18 months after purchase, conveniently past the 1-year warranty mark. Seems to be a pretty common occurrence if you search around for Samsung LED DLPs issues. Replacing the LED unit is very expensive, sometimes half the cost of the TV value. The failure rate is so bad that Samsung is stopping (or has stopped?) production on all LED DLPs. Go with bulb-based if you’re getting a rear projection TV. Reliability is perhaps the most important feature of a large screen TV for me, which this TV seems to fail miserably at.

15 months only – p and j –
This TV was fine for 15 months, and then the red led or something to that effect failed today so we now have a blue-green tv. Of course amazon only has a 30 day warranty and samsung only has a 365 day warranty (unless you pay extra)so we are stuck. I will post again if the local repair facility is able to fix it in a short and cost effective manner.
If not, my advice is to not buy from samsung.
